Why Is It Advisable To Give Your Dog This Doses Of CBD?
An increasing number of people talk about using cannabis for their pets, and it’s no surprise: there are a lot of stories about how well the herb can work. But is this weed your dog?
Cannabis has been used as medicine since ancient times. Hippocrates wrote that it could help relieve pain and inflammation, and now we know that he was not wrong.
A 2011 review found CBD to be effective in treating neuropathic pain (pain caused by damaged nerves), saying: “These results suggest that CBD could represent a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of chronic pain.” The same study also found low levels of evidence to support using cannabis products made from THC as a treatment for cancer-related neuropathic pain.
This is, however, an area where research is crucial for us to be able to provide the best treatment options. It’s still early days for investigating the effects of cannabis on animals because currently, no approved veterinary products exist. The biggest reason for this is that there are many restrictions surrounding cannabis use in pets and animal research. This makes it challenging to study the drug quickly and adequately means that pet owners can’t access CBD products yet.
Studies show the effectiveness of CBD in treating certain conditions in people, but how much do we know about its efficacy or safety when used with pets? Currently, studies have shown it may be beneficial for chronic pain, nausea, vomiting, and anxiety. But as a result of the lack of research, not enough is known about the correct dosing for pets to recommend it as a treatment.
It’s also important that pet owners know that if their animals are given CBD products, they will still need to undergo a drug test that may detect cannabinoids in their urine. And it can’t come from any source: The best cbd oil for dogs used for pets must be extracted from actual cannabis plants bred specially to contain high levels of CBD and low levels of THC. So, unfortunately, your neighbor won’t be able to help out by giving you some extra leaves off their plant!
The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) recently released a position statement on cannabis, outlining their concerns. They advise against giving pets THC and CBD products without the advice of a veterinarian.
We’re sure you’ve heard stories about how well cannabis can work for pets, but at this stage in time, it’s best to use them with caution until we know more about their safety and effectiveness. If your vet recommends using cannabis products for your pet, be sure to speak with other experts so that you have lots of opinions to help you make the right decision.
